Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: the procedure; an odd function has a graph symmetric about the origin.

Steps:

  1. Compute y′y', find the extrema and draw the table of variations.
  2. Find the x-intercepts: x(x2−3)=0x(x^2-3)=0.
Exercise 2.

What you need: y=ax+bcx+dy=\dfrac{ax+b}{cx+d} has y′=ad−bc(cx+d)2y'=\dfrac{ad-bc}{(cx+d)^2}, vertical asymptote x=−dcx=-\dfrac dc and horizontal asymptote y=acy=\dfrac ac.

Steps:

  1. Compute y′y' and its sign.
  2. Find the two asymptotes and the intercepts.
Exercise 3.

What you need: divide to write y=x+1x+1y=x+\dfrac{1}{x+1}.

Steps:

  1. Compute y′=1−1(x+1)2y'=1-\dfrac{1}{(x+1)^2} and write it as one fraction.
  2. Draw the table of variations with −2-2, −1-1, 00 marked.
Exercise 4.

What you need: the number of solutions of f(x)=kf(x)=k is the number of intersections of the graph with the line y=ky=k.

Steps:

  1. Compare kk with the local maximum 22 and the local minimum −2-2.
  2. Count the intersections.
Exercise 5.

What you need: the table of variations of a cubic; the centre of symmetry has the root of y′′=0y''=0 as its x-coordinate.

Steps:

  1. Compute y′y' and find the extrema.
  2. Compare 00 with the local maximum and minimum values to count solutions.
  3. Solve y′′=0y''=0.
Exercise 6.

What you need: the tangent at x0x_0 is y=f′(x0)(x−x0)+f(x0)y=f'(x_0)(x-x_0)+f(x_0) (derivatives, grade 11).

Steps:

  1. Compute f(3)f(3) and f′(3)f'(3).
  2. Write the tangent and put x=0x=0.
Exercise 7.

What you need: the sign of N′(t)N'(t) tells whether it increases or decreases; the horizontal asymptote gives the long-run value.

Steps:

  1. Compute N(0)N(0) and N′(t)N'(t).
  2. Compute lim⁡t→+∞N(t)\lim\limits_{t\to+\infty}N(t).
Exercise 8.

What you need: y=ax+bx+cy=\dfrac{ax+b}{x+c} has the vertical asymptote x=−cx=-c and the horizontal asymptote y=ay=a.

Steps:

  1. Deduce cc and aa from the two asymptotes.
  2. Substitute the point (0,−1)(0, -1) to find bb.
Exercise 9.

What you need: the x-coordinates of the intersections solve x+1x−1=x−1\dfrac{x+1}{x-1}=x-1 with x≠1x\neq1; solve a quadratic equation (grade 10).

Steps:

  1. Multiply both sides by x−1x-1 and get a quadratic equation.
  2. Check the condition x≠1x\neq1, then compute the y-coordinates.
Exercise 10.

What you need: parallel lines have the same gradient; the gradient of the tangent at x0x_0 is y′(x0)y'(x_0).

Steps:

  1. Solve y′(x0)=−2(x0−1)2=−2y'(x_0)=\dfrac{-2}{(x_0-1)^2}=-2.
  2. For each root, compute y0y_0 and write the tangent; check that it is not the line y=−2xy=-2x itself.
