Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: f(x)=x2+1>0f(x)=x^2+1>0, so S=∫03(x2+1) dxS=\displaystyle\int_0^3(x^2+1)\,dx.

Steps:

  1. Find the antiderivative x33+x\dfrac{x^3}{3}+x.
  2. Substitute the limits.
Exercise 2.

What you need: x3<0x^3<0 when x<0x<0, so we must split at x=0x=0.

Steps:

  1. Evaluate ∫−10x3dx\displaystyle\int_{-1}^0x^3dx and ∫02x3dx\displaystyle\int_0^2x^3dx.
  2. Take the absolute value of each part and add.

What you need: the limits are the xx-coordinates of the intersection points; take the upper function minus the lower one.

Steps:

  1. Solve x2=2xx^2=2x.
  2. Test x=1x=1 to see which graph is on top.
Exercise 4.

What you need: V=π∫abf2(x) dxV=\pi\displaystyle\int_a^bf^2(x)\,dx; a cone has volume 13πr2h\dfrac13\pi r^2h.

Steps:

  1. Write V=π∫03x2dxV=\pi\displaystyle\int_0^3x^2dx.
  2. The solid is a cone with r=3r=3 and h=3h=3.
Exercise 5.

Steps:

  1. Find where the graph meets the xx-axis.
  2. Find the area using 4−x24-x^2, then evaluate π∫−22(x2−4)2dx\pi\displaystyle\int_{-2}^2(x^2-4)^2dx.
Exercise 6.

What you need: the limits are the xx-coordinates of the intersection points.

Steps:

  1. Solve x2−2x=xx^2-2x=x.
  2. Evaluate ∫(x−(x2−2x)) dx\displaystyle\int\big(x-(x^2-2x)\big)\,dx between the two roots.
Exercise 7.

What you need: the area of the window is the integral of a non-negative function between its two crossings of the xx-axis.

Steps:

  1. The crossings with the xx-axis are x=±1x=\pm1.
  2. Evaluate S=∫−11(1.5−1.5x2) dxS=\displaystyle\int_{-1}^1(1.5-1.5x^2)\,dx, then multiply by the price.
Exercise 8.

What you need: V=∫abS(x) dxV=\displaystyle\int_a^bS(x)\,dx.

Steps:

  1. S(x)=x(4−x)=4x−x2S(x)=x(4-x)=4x-x^2.
  2. Evaluate ∫04(4x−x2) dx\displaystyle\int_0^4(4x-x^2)\,dx.
Exercise 9.

What you need: sin⁡x≥0\sin x\ge0 on [0,π][0, \pi]; integrals of trigonometric functions (see definite integrals).

Steps:

  1. S=∫0πsin⁡x dxS=\displaystyle\int_0^{\pi}\sin x\,dx.
  2. Use the antiderivative −cos⁡x-\cos x.
Exercise 10.

What you need: the graphs cross three times, so the upper function changes.

Steps:

  1. Solve x3−x=3x  ⟺  x(x2−4)=0x^3-x=3x\iff x(x^2-4)=0.
  2. Evaluate ∫∣x3−4x∣ dx\displaystyle\int\lvert x^3-4x\rvert\,dx on [−2,0][-2, 0] and [0,2][0, 2].
