Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: OM→=xi⃗+yj⃗+zk⃗  ⟺  M(x,y,z)\overrightarrow{OM}=x\vec{i}+y\vec{j}+z\vec{k}\iff M(x, y, z); a missing component has coefficient 00.

Steps:

  1. Read off the coefficients of i⃗\vec{i}, j⃗\vec{j}, k⃗\vec{k} in turn.
  2. b) The coefficient of j⃗\vec{j} is 00.
Exercise 2.

What you need: projection onto a coordinate plane: set the remaining coordinate to 00; the plane (Ozx)(Ozx) is y=0y=0.

Steps:

  1. Write the three projections onto the three planes.
  2. Onto the axis OyOy: keep only the y-coordinate.
  3. The distance to (Ozx)(Ozx) is ∣y∣|y|.
Exercise 3.

What you need: AB→=(xB−xA, yB−yA, zB−zA)\overrightarrow{AB}=(x_B-x_A,\ y_B-y_A,\ z_B-z_A); AB=a2+b2+c2AB=\sqrt{a^2+b^2+c^2}.

Steps:

  1. Subtract coordinate by coordinate.
  2. Add the three squares and take the square root.
Exercise 4.

What you need: midpoint and centroid: the mean of each coordinate.

Steps:

  1. Add each coordinate of AA and BB, then divide by 22.
  2. Add each coordinate of AA, BB, CC, then divide by 33.
Exercise 5.

What you need: MM is the midpoint of ANAN   ⟺  \iff xM=xA+xN2x_M=\dfrac{x_A+x_N}{2} (and likewise), that is xN=2xM−xAx_N=2x_M-x_A.

Steps:

  1. Double the coordinates of MM.
  2. Subtract the coordinates of AA.
Exercise 6.

What you need: OP=x2+y2+z2OP=\sqrt{x^2+y^2+z^2}.

Steps:

  1. Square the three coordinates and add them.
  2. Take the square root and round.
Exercise 7.

What you need: the distance to (Oyz)(Oyz) is ∣x∣|x|; the distance to the axis OxOx is y2+z2\sqrt{y^2+z^2}.

Steps:

  1. Write the projection onto (Oxy)(Oxy).
  2. Find OMOM from the three coordinates.
  3. Decide which coordinates each distance uses.
Exercise 8.

What you need: the parallelepiped rule AC′→=AB→+AD→+AA′→\overrightarrow{AC'}=\overrightarrow{AB}+\overrightarrow{AD}+\overrightarrow{AA'}; the centre of a square is the midpoint of a diagonal.

Steps:

  1. Add the three edge vectors to get C′C'.
  2. II is the midpoint of A′C′A'C'.
  3. Find IBIB with the distance formula.
Exercise 9.

What you need: AB=(xB−xA)2+(yB−yA)2AB=\sqrt{(x_B-x_A)^2+(y_B-y_A)^2} in the plane; in space there is an extra (zB−zA)2(z_B-z_A)^2.

Steps:

  1. a) Find the two coordinate differences.
  2. b) Add the height difference 1212 and notice that ABB′ABB' has a right angle at BB.
Exercise 10.

What you need: a point on OzOz has the form M(0,0,t)M(0, 0, t); MA=MB  ⟺  MA2=MB2MA=MB\iff MA^2=MB^2.

Steps:

  1. Write MA2MA^2 and MB2MB^2 in terms of tt.
  2. Set them equal; the t2t^2 terms cancel.
