Exercises

Exercise 1

Three lines are at distances 44 cm, 66 cm and 7.57.5 cm from the centre of the circle (O,6 cm)(O, 6\text{ cm}). Find the position of each line relative to the circle.

Exercise 2

The line aa is at distance 88 cm from the centre of the circle (O,10 cm)(O, 10\text{ cm}). Prove that aa cuts the circle at two points AA, BB and find ABAB.

Exercise 3

From a point MM at distance 1515 cm from the centre OO, draw the tangent MAMA to the circle (O,9 cm)(O, 9\text{ cm}). Find MAMA.

Exercise 4

The triangle ABCABC is right-angled at AA, with AB=3AB=3 cm and AC=4AC=4 cm. Prove that ABAB is a tangent to the circle (C,CA)(C, CA) and that the point BB lies outside this circle.

Exercise 5

From the top MM of a tower 8080 m high, we look out to sea to the horizon at AA, where MAMA touches the Earth. Take a cross-section of the Earth to be a circle with centre OO and radius 64006400 km. Find MAMA (give your answer to the nearest kilometre).

Exercise 6

From a point MM with OM=8OM=8 cm, draw the two tangents MAMA, MBMB to the circle (O,4 cm)(O, 4\text{ cm}). Find the angle ∠AMB\angle AMB and the measure of the minor arc ABAB. (Revise arcs and chords.)

Exercise 7

(2.0 marks) From a point MM outside the circle (O,3 cm)(O, 3\text{ cm}), with OM=5OM=5 cm, draw the two tangents MAMA, MBMB (AA, BB are the points of contact). Let HH be the point where OMOM meets ABAB.

a) Prove that the four points MM, AA, OO, BB lie on one circle.

b) Prove that OM⊥ABOM\perp AB at HH.

c) Find MAMA and ABAB.

Exercise 8 Challenge

From a point MM outside the circle (O)(O), draw the two tangents MAMA, MBMB with MA=10MA=10 cm. The tangent at a point CC on the minor arc ABAB meets MAMA and MBMB at DD and EE respectively. Find the perimeter of the triangle MDEMDE.

Mini test

15 minutes, without looking back at the lesson. Part I: circle one letter; Part II: write T or F for each statement; Part III: write the answer in the box.

Part I. Multiple choice

Question 1. Consider the circle (O,7 cm)(O, 7\text{ cm}) and a line aa at distance 77 cm from OO. Which of the following statements is true?
A. aa cuts (O)(O) at two points.B. aa touches (O)(O).C. aa does not meet (O)(O).D. aa passes through OO.
Question 2. A line at distance 33 cm from the centre of the circle (O,5 cm)(O, 5\text{ cm}) cuts the circle in a chord of length
A. 44 cm.B. 88 cm.C. 2342\sqrt{34} cm.D. 22 cm.
Question 3. From a point MM with OM=13OM=13 cm, draw the tangent MAMA to the circle (O,5 cm)(O, 5\text{ cm}). The length MAMA is
A. 194\sqrt{194} cm.B. 1212 cm.C. 88 cm.D. 1818 cm.
Question 4. The tangents at AA and BB to the circle (O)(O) meet at MM, and ∠AMB=50∘\angle AMB=50^\circ. The angle ∠AOB\angle AOB is
A. 50∘50^\circ.B. 40∘40^\circ.C. 130∘130^\circ.D. 25∘25^\circ.

Part II. True or false

Question 1. From a point MM with OM=12OM=12 cm, draw the two tangents MAMA, MBMB to the circle (O,6 cm)(O, 6\text{ cm}). Decide whether each statement is true or false.
a) MA=63MA=6\sqrt3 cm.T / F
b) ∠AMO=30∘\angle AMO=30^\circ.T / F
c) ∠AMB=30∘\angle AMB=30^\circ.T / F
d) MA=MBMA=MB. T / F

Part III. Short answer

Question 1. A line at distance 44 cm from the centre OO cuts the circle (O)(O) in a chord of length 66 cm. Find the radius (in cm) of the circle.
Question 2. The two tangents MAMA, MBMB to the circle (O)(O) have MA=7.5MA=7.5 cm. The tangent at a point CC on the minor arc ABAB meets MAMA and MBMB at DD and EE. Find the perimeter (in cm) of the triangle MDEMDE.

Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: compare dd with RR.

Steps:

  1. Compare each distance with 66.
Exercise 2.

What you need: if d<Rd<R they intersect; the chord has length 2R2−d22\sqrt{R^2-d^2}.

Steps:

  1. Compare 88 with 1010, then find the chord.
Exercise 3.

What you need: OA⊥MAOA\perp MA, so the triangle OAMOAM is right-angled at AA.

Steps:

  1. Use Pythagoras' theorem with hypotenuse OMOM.
Exercise 4.

What you need: the test for a tangent.

Steps:

  1. Show that AA is on (C,CA)(C, CA) and AB⊥CAAB\perp CA.
  2. Compare CBCB with 44.
Exercise 5.

What you need: OA⊥MAOA\perp MA; convert 8080 m =0.08=0.08 km.

Steps:

  1. Compute OM=6400+0.08OM=6400+0.08 (km).
  2. Use Pythagoras' theorem in the triangle OAMOAM, right-angled at AA.
Exercise 6.

What you need: sin⁡∠AMO=OAOM\sin\angle AMO=\dfrac{OA}{OM}; the angles of a quadrilateral add up to 360∘360^\circ.

Steps:

  1. Find ∠AMO\angle AMO, then ∠AMB\angle AMB, then ∠AOB\angle AOB.
Exercise 7.

What you need: the median to the hypotenuse is half the hypotenuse; the property of the perpendicular bisector.

Steps:

  1. Let II be the midpoint of OMOM and prove that IA=IB=IO=IMIA=IB=IO=IM.
  2. Show that OMOM is the perpendicular bisector of ABAB.
  3. Find AHAH using the area of the triangle OAMOAM.
Exercise 8.

What you need: the property of two tangents from a point, used at DD and at EE.

Steps:

  1. Show that DC=DADC=DA and EC=EBEC=EB, then write the perimeter in terms of MAMA, MBMB.
