Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: Viète's theorem, used only when the equation has roots.

Steps:

  1. Check that Δ≥0\Delta\geq0 or that aa and cc have opposite signs.
  2. Work out −ba-\dfrac ba and ca\dfrac ca.
Exercise 2.

What you need: check a+b+ca+b+c or a−b+ca-b+c.

Steps:

  1. Work out a+b+ca+b+c; if it is not 00, work out a−b+ca-b+c.
  2. Write the other root ca\dfrac ca or −ca-\dfrac ca.
Exercise 3.

What you need: x1+x2=4x_1+x_2=4 (or x1x2=1x_1x_2=1).

Steps:

  1. Work out x2=4−x1x_2=4-x_1.
  2. Check with the product: x2=12+3x_2=\dfrac1{2+\sqrt3}.
Exercise 4.

What you need: uu, vv are the roots of x2−Sx+P=0x^2-Sx+P=0, which needs S2−4P≥0S^2-4P\geq0.

Steps:

  1. Form the equation x2−Sx+P=0x^2-Sx+P=0.
  2. Solve it (or show that it has no solutions).
Exercise 5.

What you need: S=x1+x2S=x_1+x_2, P=x1x2P=x_1x_2; write each expression in terms of SS and PP.

Steps:

  1. Check that the equation has two roots and find SS, PP.
  2. Use S2−2PS^2-2P, SP\dfrac SP and x1x2(x1+x2)=PSx_1x_2(x_1+x_2)=PS.
Exercise 6.

What you need: P<0P<0: opposite signs; Δ≥0\Delta\geq0 and P>0P>0: both have the sign of SS.

Steps:

  1. Work out PP; if P>0P>0, check Δ′\Delta' and work out SS.
Exercise 7.

What you need: the two sides have sum S=60S=60 and product P=875P=875.

Steps:

  1. Form the equation x2−60x+875=0x^2-60x+875=0.
  2. Solve it with the reduced discriminant.
Exercise 8.

What you need: Δ>0\Delta>0; x12+x22=S2−2Px_1^2+x_2^2=S^2-2P; over a common denominator A=x12+x22x1x2A=\dfrac{x_1^2+x_2^2}{x_1x_2}.

Steps:

  1. Work out Δ\Delta.
  2. Find SS, PP, then S2−2PS^2-2P.
  3. Use the result of part b) in part c).
Exercise 9.

What you need: the signs of the roots; (x1+x2)2=x1+x2+2x1x2(\sqrt{x_1}+\sqrt{x_2})^2=x_1+x_2+2\sqrt{x_1x_2}.

Steps:

  1. Work out Δ′\Delta', SS, PP.
  2. Square the required expression and use SS, PP.
  3. Take the square root, remembering that the expression is positive.
