Solving simultaneous linear equations
Goals
- Solve simultaneous linear equations by the substitution method.
- Solve them by the elimination method, including when you first multiply both sides by a number.
- Recognise equations with no solution or infinitely many solutions, and check answers on a calculator.
Remember
- The common idea: transform until you have an equation in one unknown.
- Substitution: write one unknown in terms of the other and substitute into the other equation.
- Elimination: make the coefficients of one unknown equal (then subtract) or opposite (then add); multiply both sides when needed.
- If you reach with : no solution. If you reach : infinitely many solutions.

Hints (only when stuck)
What you need: the substitution method.
Steps:
- Substitute into the second equation.
- Find , then .
What you need: it is easiest to make an unknown with coefficient or the subject.
Steps:
- From the first equation: .
- Substitute into the second equation and solve.
What you need: the coefficients of are opposite, so add the equations.
Steps:
- Add to find .
- Substitute into to find .
What you need: multiply both sides so that the coefficients of one unknown are equal.
Steps:
- Multiply the first equation by and the second by .
- Subtract to remove .
What you need: after substituting, means infinitely many solutions and () means no solution.
Steps:
- Write from the equation in which has coefficient .
- Substitute into the other equation.
What you need: the elimination method (or a trick: add the equations, then subtract them).
Steps:
- Add: , so .
- Subtract: .
- Solve the new pair.
What you need: the point is on the graph when (Grade 8). Each point gives one equation in the unknowns , .
Steps:
- Substitute the coordinates of and to get two equations.
- Subtract them to find .
What you need: the solution of the simultaneous equations gives the coordinates of the point where the two lines meet.
Steps:
- a) Write .
- b) Multiply the second equation by and add.
- c) Substitute the coordinates of that point into .
What you need: you can put , to get simpler equations, or expand the brackets and simplify.
Steps:
- Solve , .
- From , find and .
