Hints (only when stuck)

Exercise 1.

What you need: a positive number aa has two square roots, a\sqrt{a} and −a-\sqrt{a}.

Steps:

  1. Find the positive number whose square is the given number.
  2. Add its opposite.
Exercise 2.

What you need: (a)2=a\left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2=a for a≥0a\ge0; a2=∣a∣\sqrt{a^2}=|a|.

Steps:

  1. Take each square root.
  2. Add or subtract.
Exercise 3.

What you need: for aa, b≥0b\ge0: a<b  ⟺  a<ba<b\iff\sqrt{a}<\sqrt{b}.

Steps:

  1. Write the whole number as a square root: 6=366=\sqrt{36}, 3=93=\sqrt9.
  2. Compare the numbers under the root signs.
Exercise 4.

What you need: A\sqrt{A} is defined when A≥0A\ge0.

Steps:

  1. Write the inequality A≥0A\ge0.
  2. Solve it; remember to reverse the sign when dividing by a negative number.
Exercise 5.

What you need: A2=∣A∣\sqrt{A^2}=|A|.

Steps:

  1. Find the sign of the number inside (compare 3\sqrt3 with 11, and 11\sqrt{11} with 33).
  2. Remove the absolute value.
Exercise 6.

What you need: a square of area SS has side S\sqrt{S}.

Steps:

  1. The side is 30\sqrt{30} m.
  2. The perimeter is 44 times the side; use the calculator and round only at the end.
Exercise 7.

What you need: t=h5  ⟺  t2=h5  ⟺  h=5t2t=\sqrt{\dfrac{h}{5}}\iff t^2=\dfrac{h}{5}\iff h=5t^2 (for t≥0t\ge0).

Steps:

  1. Part a: substitute h=80h=80.
  2. Part b: use h=5t2h=5t^2.
Exercise 8.

What you need: the identity (a−b)2=a2−2ab+b2(a-b)^2=a^2-2ab+b^2 (grade 8) and A2=∣A∣\sqrt{A^2}=|A|.

Steps:

  1. Write x2−6x+9=(x−3)2x^2-6x+9=(x-3)^2.
  2. For x≥3x\ge3, ∣x−3∣=x−3|x-3|=x-3.
Exercise 9.

What you need: B\sqrt{B} is defined when B≥0B\ge0; for c≥0c\ge0, B=c  ⟺  B=c2\sqrt{B}=c\iff B=c^2.

Steps:

  1. Solve 4x−8≥04x-8\ge0.
  2. Substitute x=6x=6.
  3. Solve 4x−8=364x-8=36 and check the condition.
Exercise 10.

What you need: x2=∣x∣≥0\sqrt{x^2}=|x|\ge0, so the right side must also be non-negative.

Steps:

  1. Condition: 2x−3≥02x-3\ge0, that is, x≥1.5x\ge1.5.
  2. Then x>0x>0, so ∣x∣=x|x|=x; solve x=2x−3x=2x-3.
