Linear inequalities in one unknown

Lesson 2.3 · 20 min read · Updated

Minh has 200200 thousand đồng. He buys a box of pens for 5050 thousand đồng and wants to buy some exercise books at 1212 thousand đồng each. What is the greatest number of books he can buy?

Let xx be the number of books. He pays 50+12x50+12x, which must not exceed 200200, so 50+12x≤20050+12x\le200. This is not an equation but an inequality.

Linear inequalities in one unknown

Explore: trying a few values

xx 1010 1212 1313
50+12x50+12x 170170 194194 206206
≤200\le200? yes yes no

With 1212 books he has enough money; with 1313 he does not. But trying numbers one by one is slow; we need a method like the one for solving equations.

How to solve

We transform an inequality using the properties of inequalities from the last lesson.

These rules work because adding the same number to both sides keeps the direction, while multiplying by a negative number reverses it (for example 2<32<3 but −2>−3-2>-3).

When the coefficient of xx is negative, the division step needs the most care.

-2-11234567-2.0-1.5-1.0-0.50.51.01.52.0xyO23x > 2x ≤ 3
The solutions x>2x>2 (top) and x≤3x\le3 (bottom) on number lines

A hollow point means that number is not a solution (sign >> or <<); a filled point means it is a solution (sign ≥\ge or ≤\le).

Inequalities that reduce to linear form

Many inequalities have brackets or fractions. We expand the brackets, clear the fractions, move the terms in xx to one side and the numbers to the other.

Now we answer Minh's question.

Key terms

Summary

  • Linear inequality in one unknown: ax+b<0ax+b<0 (or >>, ≤\le, ≥\ge), a≠0a\neq0.
  • Moving a term to the other side changes its sign.
  • Multiplying or dividing by a positive number: keep the direction; by a negative number: reverse it.
  • Brackets or fractions: expand, multiply by a positive common denominator, reach ax<cax<c, then divide by aa.
  • Real problems: check the conditions (whole numbers…) before choosing the answer.

Practice

Each exercise comes with what you need and some steps to start. Try it yourself first, then open the solution.

Question 2. A taxi firm charges a starting fee of 1212 thousand đồng plus 1515 thousand đồng per kilometre. With 200200 thousand đồng, what is the greatest whole number of kilometres you can travel?

Show answers and explanations
  1. Part I, question 1: C. C has the form ax+b≤0ax+b\le0 with a=2≠0a=2\neq0. A has a=0a=0; B contains x2x^2; D has the unknown in a denominator.
  2. Part I, question 2: B. −2x>−6  ⟺  x<3-2x>-6\iff x<3 (dividing by −2-2 reverses the sign). A forgets to reverse; C and D get the sign wrong when moving the 66.
  3. Part I, question 3: A. 3x−6≤x+4  ⟺  2x≤10  ⟺  x≤53x-6\le x+4\iff 2x\le10\iff x\le5. C expands the bracket as 3x−23x-2; D moves −6-6 to the right without changing its sign.
  4. Part I, question 4: A. x<2.4x<2.4, so the greatest integer is 22. B comes from rounding up.
  5. Part II, question 1: a) True; b) True; c) False; d) True. a) True: −2≥−2-2\ge-2. b) True. c) False: dividing by −3-3 reverses the sign, so x≤3x\le3. d) True: 00, 11, 22, 33.
  6. Part III, question 1: 3. 2x+2>9−x  ⟺  3x>7  ⟺  x>73≈2.332x+2>9-x\iff 3x>7\iff x>\dfrac73\approx2.33, so the least integer is 33.
  7. Part III, question 2: 12. 12+15x≤200  ⟺  x≤18815≈12.512+15x\le200\iff x\le\dfrac{188}{15}\approx12.5, so at most 1212 km.
